Redland has secured the signature of AFL Draft prospect Matthew McGannon for the 2019 NEAFL season.

Hailing from Waratah Bay in Victoria, McGannon has been an integral part of the Gippsland Power program where he named in the 2018 TAC Cup Team of the Year.

The running defender/midfielder averaged 20 disposals for the Power aswell as earning representative honours with Victoria Country as an over-ager.

New Bombers Coach Phil Carse told McGannon was an excellent acquisition for the club.

“We are thrilled to have Matt on board for the 2019 season. It will be a great challenge for him to move interstate but we believe he will thrive in our environment at senior level,” he said.

“Matt trained with us pre-Christmas, showed some real skill on the track and was well received by the group immediately.

“We believe Matt will give us plenty of run across half back and through the midfield and that the grounds and aspirational nature of the NEAFL will suit his game style.”

McGannon has had injuries interrupt his development, but he played two games for Vic Country this year and earned an invite to the AFL Draft Combine.

A strong tackler, McGannon is quick, a good decision maker and uses the ball well by hand and foot, which he showed by finishing third in the Combine’s kicking test.

McGannon will relocate to Brisbane in early January with the Bombers resuming pre-season on January 14.
