The North East Australian Football League is pleased to announce the 2018 season will kick off on Good Friday for the first time when Canberra hosts Southport in an historic clash next year.

The Demons and Sharks will go head-to-head at the home of the Queanbeyan Football Club, Allinsure Park, at 2pm on March 30.

Canberra Demons General Manager, Shaun Young, said the club is excited to host the Good Friday clash in front of their home fans.

“We are thrilled to host the first ever NEAFL Good Friday match in 2018,” he said.

“The opportunity to play a standalone season opener against one of our competition rivals will be a big boost for our fans and supporters, in what is shaping as an important contest to begin our new season.”

Southport Football Manager, Jarrod Field, said the club is also looking forward to the occasion.

“The Sharks are proud to be involved in a historic match for the NEAFL and kicking off our season against tough opposition on their home turf,” he said.

“It will be a big challenge for our playing group, but I know it is one they are looking forward to.”

The Demons and Sharks’ fixture has been brought forward from Round 2 to act as the season opener. All clubs will then take to the field on April 7 for Round 1.

The full 2018 NEAFL Fixture will be released on Friday, December 1, at 1pm AEDST.
