The Brisbane Lions pulled off an incredible three-point win over minor premiers Sydney to claim the 2017 NEAFL flag last Saturday night.

Our NEAFL Media journalists Myles Stedman and Kate Solomonson spoke to several players and coach Mitch Hahn to get their reactions.

Matt Eagles

“During the week we worked on our contested ball as we knew that Sydney have a really strong foundation, and I feel like we stepped up tonight.

“I’ve never played in a grand final before and I tried not to think too much about it, I just wanted to have fun and play my best football.”

Ben Keays

“It meant a lot to all the boys (to win) and the whole club, obviously not being in the finals for the AFL there was a lot riding on us in the NEAFL.

“We knew we had the wood up on Sydney. We had beat them twice this year so during the week we tried to have some fun and keep it relaxed.”

Rohan Bewick

“Matt Eagles was awesome. He certainly played a massive hand in us getting over the line.

“In my time on an AFL list I haven’t seen someone improve that much, from where he’s come from to what he just produced, especially in that last month of footy. It’s a credit to him.

Cian Hanley

“Unbelievable. It’s pretty emotional now, between our coach, and myself it’s been a big year, and it’s great we got over the line.

“Defensively the boys were very good, we were under the pump there at stages, and obviously conceded a few more goals than we would’ve liked, but it was good.

Jacob Allison

“It feels bloody awesome. It’s a good feeling obviously, the feeling around the club’s been really good.

“It was a tough contest and the boys really worked hard all day, to get over the line by three points, it’s just an unreal feeling.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the boys. You train for these situations, these scenarios, the boys had a really level head, we just did what we did and tried to get repeat stoppages and surge the ball forward to get position on the ground that would allow us to defend easily.

“In the end, we must’ve done it right, because we got the win.”

Claye Beams

“The heart rate was going pretty fast. I wasn’t sure how long was left towards the end, but our defenders were absolutely massive and they got us over the line.

“We’ve had a really good year, and we’ve backed ourselves. No one gave us a chance today, I’m really proud of the boys, it was a massive effort.”

“It’s been a tough few years for the club, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. We appreciate the support the fans have given us. They’ve stuck by us and we can repay them in the near future.”

Mitch Hahn

“We just tried to stick to our processes, what we’ve done all year, and that’s’ what we spoke about at three-quarter time.

“The way our guys fought it out right until the last minute – that’s what we spoke about. We knew that’s what it was going to take, so it’s fantastic to get the victory.

“I think the style the Swans play, the contested brand, we really focused on matching them in that area, and I thought we were able to do that tonight, so the boys really dug deep.
