Former Gold Coast Suns defender Seb Tape has joined Southport for the 2017 NEAFL season.

The 24-year-old was delisted by the Suns this year after 40 games in five years, but missed the entire 2012 season after two major injuries.

An inaugural member of the Gold Coast squad, Tape was hopeful of being given an AFL lifeline in Monday’s Rookie Draft.

But the South Australian will instead remain on the Gold Coast and link up with former teammates Nathan Bock and Danny Stanley.

Bock is coming up for his third season as head coach and Stanley has also joined the Suns as an assistant coach.

Tape told the Gold Coast Bulletin his links with Bock and Stanley will make the transition easier as he looks forward to starting a new chapter in his football career.

“I was hopeful of (getting rookie listed) happening but obviously it didn’t turn out that way,” he said.

“I was planning for if it didn’t happen so now I’m looking at a new chapter and I’m excited about what may come.

“I’d like to play some finals footy and maybe do well enough to get back on an AFL list.”

Tape is a key recruit for the Sharks as they look towards regaining a place in the finals next year. In a further boost to their playing stocks, best-and-fairest winner Andrew Boston has re-signed for another season.
