Suns too strong for Aspley in practice match thrashing

The Gold Coast Suns reserves have romped to a 106-point win over the Aspley Hornets, sending a strong message to the rest of the NEAFL competition in their practice match on Saturday morning at Metricon Stadium.

The Suns ran in seven unanswered goals to start the match, putting the result beyond doubt before half time in an encouraging performance featuring 17 AFL-listed players.

Brandon Matera (five goals) and Cameron Loersch (four goals) made strong cases for senior consideration in the Suns’ last chance to impress before the AFL side’s first round clash with the Brisbane Lions next weekend.

The performance was made all the more sweet for the Suns younger listed and academy players, as a majority of the senior side including Gary Ablett watched on from the stands.

After kicking the first four goals of the match inside the 8th minute, the Suns proceeded to squander an opportunity to drive home the advantage further, scoring eight consecutive behinds, before Darcy Macpherson broke the unwanted trend with a goal before quarter time.

Sean Lemmens and Brad Scheer were busy with ball in hand, whilst Keegan Brooksby lead a rock-solid Suns defence.

Loersch left the field after an off the ball tackle with what appeared to be a hamstring twinge, but returned in the last quarter to slot two late goals, bringing his tally to four.

Matera slotted goal of the day with his last effort, as he threaded the needle hemmed up against the boundary whilst under pressure in the left forward pocket.

Making things worse for Aspley were injuries to Matt Argus (ankle, first quarter) and Doug Lawrence, whilst Eddie Mallan was reported with minutes left in the match for an altercation with Matt Shaw.

The Suns NEAFL side will be hoping the emphatic victory is a precursor to a successful season, following a return to the finals in 2016.

Aspley will take the weekend off next week before a Round 1 road trip to Darwin to take on the NT Thunder in a Saturday night blockbuster.
