NEAFL MVP VOTES: Round 3

Southport midfielder Matt Shaw has continued his outstanding start to the NEAFL season with another maximum-vote performance against Canberra on Friday.

Shaw has extended his NEAFL MVP Award lead to 11 votes, after collecting 30 disposals, nine marks and a goal in the Sharks’ thrilling six-point victory over Canberra.

Meanwhile, Brisbane’s Ryan Bastinac also polled the maximum 10 votes after leading the Lions to a strong win over Aspley, finishing with 31 disposals, 10 clearances and three goals in a 48-point victory.

Down in Sydney, Isaac Cumming attracted nine votes after his starring role in the GIANTS first win over the season.

Cumming had 33 disposals and six rebound 50s as the GIANTs triumphed by 38 points over Gold Coast, with forward Zach Sproule picking up seven after his five goals.

Sydney defender Colin O’Riordan (26 disposals, six inside 50s, one goal) also polled nine votes after the Swans came from behind to defeat Redland by seven points.

Rookie Sam Wicks also featured prominently with six votes after 27 disposals and seven clearances.

The NEAFL Most Valuable Player Award is presented to the player uniquely judged the best in the competition by a combination of umpire and coaches votes.

The votes are submitted post-game cast on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis. As such, the maximum amount of votes a single player can earn per match is 10 – courtesy of the maximum five votes from both umpires and coaches.

The progress of the MVP voting is published on the NEAFL website for the first 12 rounds of the season, but withheld from that point on until the winner is revealed at the end of season awards night.
