Canberra Demons midfielder Mitch Maguire has earned the Round 2 NEAFL Rising Star nomination after his impressive start to the 2017 season.

The 18-year-old polled two NEAFL MVP votes this week after collecting 23 disposals and a goal in the Demons’ loss to Aspley, backing up from 28 disposals and 11 clearances against Redland in Round 1.

Maguire’s consistent work ethic and football smarts had him well placed throughout his junior career.

Originally from the Northern Jets, he is a former NSW/ACT Rams representative who was selected in the Allies side for the National Under-18 Championships last year.

Maguire said he hopes to play consistent senior football in 2017 to keep his AFL dream alive.

“I was pretty disappointed not getting picked up by an AFL club last year, but I think it’s something you’ve got to move on from,” he said.

“Players are getting drafted from the NEAFL and it keeps getting stronger each year, so I thought it was the best option for me.

“I’m loving it at Canberra. It’s a really good team environment, everyone has been really inviting, and I couldn’t wish for anything more.”

The Rising Star is awarded to the most promising young talent in the NEAFL competition.

Nominees must be under the age of 21 and played less than 20 senior games (excluding games as AFL top-up players) at the start of the 2016 season.
