Southport will host former Sharks player and now AFL legend Nick Riewoldt for the launch of his new book, The Things That Make Us, on the Gold Coast next month.

Former Olympic medallist, Giaan Rooney, will host the even as she speaks with Riewoldt in Mackenzie’s Sports Bar on Friday, November 10 at 6pm.

The No.1 pick in the 2000 AFL draft, six-time winner of St Kilda’s best and fairest award, five-time All Australian, captain of his club for a record 220 games and 336 games as a star of the AFL, Riewoldt is an out-and-out champion.

The Things That Make Us is Riewoldt’s take on the events that made him the man he is today. From his childhood in Tasmania to the end of a distinguished AFL career, the book explains learning to live life under the spotlight and through a scandal, meeting his now-wife Catherine and starting a family, the devastating passing of his beloved sister Maddie and the great work done by the charitable foundation set up in her name.

Riewoldt said he wanted a different take on the typical footballer’s biography.

“I never wanted to write a ‘cookie-cutter’ footballer’s book—chronologically moving from the under 8s through to the big time, full of hard-ball gets, wins and losses, triumphs and disappointments,” he said.

“I chose the title, The Things that Make Us, because it made it easy to explore things we can all relate to, no matter what path our lives have taken.

“I hope there’s something in these pages for everyone who’s known grief, especially anyone who’s lost a sibling. I hope elements of my story will bring some solace to people who have known similar pain.

I hope, too, that my story brings a deeper understanding of a footballer’s crazy world. An insight into what goes into making it, what it takes to stay there, and the crippling anxiety that can consume you when your burden is to accept only the best.”

The event is free to attend, with some complimentary light nibbles available, plus the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of Nick’s new book. Non-members are welcome.
