Sydney Swans have jumped back on to the winners list with a 22-point victory in a shoot-out against Sydney University at Henson Park on Saturday.

Daniel Menzel booted three goals in his first game for the club, with a strong opening term the catalyst for the 17.14 (116) to 14.10 (94) victory.

The Swans burst out of the blocks with six goals to one in the first quarter, racing to a 33-point lead by the first change.

Th Students began to claw their way back in the second, going toe-to-toe with the Swans before booting the last two majors of the term to close the gap to 18 points at the main break.

They got within 15 points at the nine-minute mark of the third with consecutive goals to Sam Fong and Monty Krochmal, but that would be as close as the Students would get.

Sydney slammed on four straight goals in time-on – two coming from Menzel – to open up a match-winning 43-point advantage at three-quarter time.

The last term was a free-flowing contest where the Students booted seven goals to four to reduce the final margin, but that damage was already done as Sydney secured its fifth win of the season.

James Rowbottom was excellent for the Swans, collecting 27 disposals, 11 clearances, nine inside 50s and two majors in a best afield performance.

Harry Reynolds (23 disposals, seven rebound 50s) was strong in defence, and youngster James Bell (22 disposals, two goals) was lively.

For the Students, young midfielder Jake Bartholomaues shone with 23 disposals, 11 tackles, seven inside 50s and two goals, whilst Lewis Stevenson (29 disposals) stood up in the midfield and Will Sierakowski was also among their better performers.

Sydney has the bye next week, and Sydney University will host Redland at Henson Park.
