Clubs with a Bye
In our weekly column, Statistically Speaking, we scoured the
Champion Data stats to review Round 11 by the numbers.
STAR PERFORMER
Aspley co-captain James Ives had his best performance of the
season on Saturday, leading his side to a dominant 65-point victory against
Sydney University to lift the Hornets in to the top six. Ives, 25, collected 30
disposals (16 contested), six inside 50s, five clearances and a goal to inspire
his side to victory.
RANKINGS RULER
GIANTS duo Zac Langdon and Daniel Lloyd did the damage against
Redland to occupy the top two places on the Champion Data ranking points leaderboard
this week. Langdon (162 points) was best afield with 28 disposals, eight inside
50s, and five tackles, also booting 2.3 plus 13 unique score involvements. Not
far behind him was Lloyd, who was a bull in the middle with 28 disposals (17
contested), 11 clearances, five tackles, five inside 50s, and two goals for 157
points, as the GIANTS held on to win a thriller by 10 points.
ROOKIE WATCH
Mid-season draftee Mitch Riordan had an eye-catching debut
for the SUNS on Saturday. The 19-year-old dynamic inside midfielder laid 12
tackles in Gold Coast’s inspired 15-point victory at Fankhauser Reserve.
Riordan, who was recruited from the Dandenong Stingrays, finished the day with
17 disposals (10 contested), and four clearances as well. He led the round for
most ‘positives’ with 16, adding a smother, spoil, and two knock ons to his long
stats sheet.
HOODOO CONTINUES
Southport has already broken one hoodoo in 2019 and they
were hot favourites to break a long-standing losing streak against the SUNS on
Saturday, but Gold Coast had other ideas. The Sharks 15-point loss means they haven’t
beaten Gold Coast in five years, stretching back to Round 14, 2014.
ASPLEY REVERSES FORTUNES
The Hornets have come a long way since their Round 1 loss to
Sydney University, beating the Students comfortably at home on Saturday. The
Hornets only conceded nine points from stoppages (and scored 32 points
themselves) which was only the third time this season a team has conceded nine
points or less. Sydney University was one of them. In a direct reversal from when
these sides last met the Students conceded six points from stoppages against
the Hornets in the opening round.
ROOS CONTINUES LEATHER POISONING
Southport midfielder Tyler Roos again racked up the disposals
on Saturday despite the Sharks’ loss to the SUNS. The
defender-turned-midfielder finished with 37 disposals to extend his margin art
the top of the disposals leaderboard. Roos (310 disposals) leads Aspley’s Matthew
Payne (275), with an impressive average of 31 per game.
SHARP SHOOTERS
Gold Coast has flown under the radar for its scoring
accuracy despite only winning three games this year. The SUNS operated at 70%
accuracy in front of goal on Saturday, and is ranked No.2 in the competition
for scoring accuracy with a season average of 58%. The team who sits on top is Canberra,
with an average of 59.9%.
