📊 Statistically Speaking: Round 18

In our weekly column, Statistically Speaking, we scoured the Champion Data stats to review Round 18 by the numbers.

STAR PERFORMER

The GIANTS only ha six AFL-listed players against Sydney on Saturday but it was a dominant performance from Nick Shipley which led them to an upset victory. Shipley simply went into beast mode, finishing with 37 disposals (24 contested), 10 clearances and 11 tackles as the GIANTS kept their top four chances alive with a 14-point victory.

RANKINGS RULER

Aspley ruckman Jake Spencer topped the ranking charts this week after playing a key role in Aspley’s important win over Redland. Spencer finished the day with 20 disposals (14 contested), seven marks (three contested), 47 hit-outs, six clearances, five inside 50s, two rebound 50s and a goal. His performance equated to 159 Champion Data ranking points.

ROOKIE WATCH

GIANTS Academy member Lachlan Squire had some match on the weekend. The 18-year-old has produced some solid matches in the NEAFL this year, but this was arguably his best. Squire had 25 disposals (14 contested), four clearances, four marks, four inside 50s and an impressive 13 tackles to be named among his side’s best players.

LIONS RECORD WINNING STREAK

Brisbane is flying at all levels in 2019 and they can tick off a NEAFL record along the way. The Lions’ 15th consecutive win on Saturday is the longest winning streak in competition history, bettering Sydney’s 14-match streak in 2017 – the year they lost the Grand Final to Brisbane. The Lions’ previous best streak was 12 games achieved six years ago, from the Qualifying Final of 2012 through to Round 10, 2013.

DEMONS DUO RISE TO THE TOP

Canberra midfielder Alex Smout and defender Angus Baker jumped to the top of the disposals leaderboard this week after both racked up the numbers against Sydney University. Smout (32 disposals) and Baker (38) sit first and second in the competition for total disposals with 498 and 467 respectively.
