Menzel boots five as Swans record impressive win over Gold Coast

The Sydney Swans have run away 58-point victors today at Metricon Stadium, topping the Gold Coast SUNS 17.14 (116) to 8.10 (58).

Despite the score line the Swans did not have it all their way throughout the match, with only two goals in it at the half-time break.

However, the flair of the Swans shone through in the third quarter as Sydney extended their lead out to six goals leading into the final quarter.

For Swans coach Jeremy Laidler, he was pleased with the result from his young team in the match.

“We had a young group and we were up for the challenge, and really got after them from the first bounce,” Laidler told neafl.com.au.

“I sort of put it on them a little bit,” Laidler said of his younger players. “It’s a good challenge, they took charge.

“It took them a little bit of out of their comfort zone today, but it’s something they have to do if they want to play senior footy.”

James Rowbottom was again impressive for the away side, finishing with 31 disposals. He was accompanied by James Rose who collected 32 disposals in the win.

Daniel Menzel was prolific with five goals in his second game back from a groin injury.

For the SUNS, it was Josh Schoenfeld who led the way with 31 disposals. The ever consistent Will Brodie was also prolific, collecting 27 possessions as well as eight tackles.

The result for Sydney creates a blockbuster clash against the Lions next weekend.

“It’s going to be a really good contest… The Lions are going really well, they’re above the pack at the moment and really dominating,” Laidler said of the fixture.

“I absolutely can’t wait for the game, I’m so excited to throw the young boys in the deep end again and see how they go against some really quality opposition.”

The SUNS will be heading to Sydney next weekend to try reverse their fortunes against the GIANTS, whilst the Swans will be looking to carry their momentum in a second consecutive trip to Queensland next weekend.
